Helena, MT - While Montana’s all-Republican congressional delegation refuses to take action to end the government shutdown and prevent healthcare costs from skyrocketing, opposition is growing louder, and now coming from their own state party.

State insurance commissioners across the country, including Montana’s Republican State Auditor, Jim Brown, are speaking out against Republicans' refusal to extend critical healthcare subsidies through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace. These subsidies allow individuals who do not receive health insurance from employers and do not qualify for Medicaid to shop for affordable plans from private insurers.

While Commissioner Brown is clearly no champion of the ACA, he acknowledged the importance of extended ACA subsidies in an interview with the Daily Montanan

... we are calling on the federal government to restore the ACA subsidies that help keep insurance within reach for Montana families, said Brown.

According to KFF, more than 77,000 individuals selected insurance through the ACA Marketplace in 2025 in Montana.
