Helena, MT – The Houston Chronicle is reporting this week more than 26,000 rape-releated pregnancies in Texas within 16 months after the state outlawed abortion. Now Montanans are forced to grapple with the potential reality of what the study’s staggering findings might mean if Republican candidates like Greg Gianforte, Tim Sheehy, Matt Rosendale and leaders of the Montana Republican Party get their way.

Montana has constitutional protections for abortion, but Republicans leaders across the state are actively working to chip away at our constitutional right to privacy and reproductive freedom.

Republican US Senate candidate Tim Sheehy compared abortion to murder in an interview last year, while Matt Rosendale said that there should not be “any exceptions” for abortion and has cosponsored legislation that would completely outlaw abortion.

Governor Greg Gianforte touts his record of being one of the state’s biggest champions of taking away freedoms from women, and signed a slate of bills limiting access to abortion last year, including an abortion ban.

“What’s happening in Texas is a devastating warning of what will happen if anti-abortion Republicans zealots get their way,” said Sheila Hogan, Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party. “Montanans have made themselves clear: they support freedom for women and their right to choose. Democrats will continue to fight for privacy and reproductive freedom across the state.”
