Gianforte roundly criticized for taking credit for ARPA funding he opposes

The Governor’s hypocrisy is facing backlash on social media

Helena, MT – Yesterday, Gov. Gianforte tweeted a picture of a giant check, congratulating his own office for allocating $1.9 million to Dillon’s water system. The money, however, originates from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), a bill he has spent months publicly opposing as “fiscally irresponsible.” The federal pandemic relief funds were championed and passed by the Democrats.Scores of online Montanans found the hypocrisy laughable. The original tweet has received over 1,200 replies, criticizing the governor’s bold-faced attempt to take unearned credit.

“Montanans are fed up with Gianforte’s hypocrisy,” says Sheila Hogan, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party. “Investing our pandemic relief funds should not be partisan. Gianforte is staging photoshoots with ARPA check in one moment, publicly opposing relief funds the next, and hoping Montanans don’t notice. This level of response is proof that Montanans are paying attention.”
