Helena, MT– Montana’s all-Republican Congressional Delegation is silent this week after President Trump released a budget proposal for next year that includes $4.5 billion in cuts to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), slashing $721 million from rural development programs that working Montanans and their families rely on every day.

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins was on Capitol Hill yesterday defending the Trump Administration’s draconian cuts to the USDA, which would devastate farmers and rural Montanans by threatening high-speed internet access and eliminating rural business programs, single-family housing direct loans, self-help housing grants, and rural housing vouchers.

Reuters reports that if the budget passes, it would have big impacts on farmers, “with the largest cuts from conservation programs that pay farmers to remove land from crop production, rural development programs for water and housing, and research grants.”

“Republicans are once again betraying our farmers,” said Interim Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party, Justin Ailport. “Daines, Sheehy, Zinke, and Downing all know these cuts would devastate rural Montanans, and yet they do nothing. I guess it’s hard to have time to care about rural Montana when you’re too busy bootlicking.”
