Helena, MT– The Daily Montanan is reporting this week that Montana’s GOP lawmakers were unsuccessful in peddling their sham “judicial reform” bills in the 2025 session, including legislation that would have required state Supreme Court justices be elected on a partisan basis.

MTGOP lawmakers prioritized attacking Montana’s judiciary branch this session by pushing bills that would weaken the integrity and independence of Montana’s court system. While Montanans made no mention of “judicial reform” ever being a top concern this legislative session, MTGOP lawmakers, with the support of Governor Greg Gianforte, went into full-force attack mode to chip away at Montana’s court system. Ultimately, most of these bills failed to make significant headway despite Republicans holding the majority in both the House and Senate.

“Once again, MTGOP and Governor Greg Gianforte tried to gaslight Montanans and rig the system,” said Interim Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party, Justin Ailport. “If it weren’t for our hardworking and tenacious Democrats, our court system would have a dark future with political hacks residing on the bench.”

“Montanans don’t want politics in the courtroom, period,” added Ailport. “MTGOP’s ‘judicial reform’ committee and bills proved to be a colossal waste of time and taxpayer money.”
