Helena, MT –  Five years ago, a violent mob attempted to overthrow a free and fair election under the direction of President Trump. The bravery of Capitol Police and other public servants prevented an insurrection, and today we honor over 140 officers who were injured or killed while protecting our democracy.

Sen. Steve Daines refused to convict Donald Trump of high crimes and misdemeanors during the impeachment trial that followed January 6. Daines claimed the trial was unconstitutional, but at the time, vowed to prosecute those involved in the violent attack.

Since January 6, Donald Trump, Steve Daines and the Republican Party have attempted to sanitize the horror we all saw happen on the Capitol grounds. Trump went so far as to issue almost 1,600 pardons – including hundreds of convicted felons. Ahead of this, Daines said that he trusted Trump to “go very thoughtfully through” the list, giving the president the green light to release up to 9 violent criminals back on Montana streets with his pardons.

Justin Ailport, interim executive director of the Montana Democratic Party, released the following statement on the five-year anniversary:

On the fifth anniversary of the January 6 insurrection, we honor the law enforcement officers and public servants who protected America in one of her darkest hours. By perpetuating this attack and then reversing justice served, Donald Trump, Steve Daines, and the Republican Party are eroding our institutions, elevating oligarchs and billionaires, and annihilating our democracy. Let me be clear – their continued war against American democracy will fail. Montanans will always stand up for truth and justice when the alternative is capitulation to wealthy out-of-touch Republicans.”
