Montana Democratic Party Reflects on our State’s History of Fighting for Voting Rights
Helena, MT – Following President Biden’s and Vice President Harris’ powerful speech in Atlanta yesterday, which advocated for protecting the right to vote in free, fair, and secure elections, Montana Democratic Party Executive Director Sheila Hogan released the following statement:
“Montana has a long history of defending Americans’ right to vote and ensuring that every election is free, fair, and secure. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was steered through the Senate and into law by MT Senator Mike Mansfield. Every Montana Senator since then has voted to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act, even Republican Senator Conrad Burns. Senator Jon Tester has carried on this long tradition as a cosponsor of the Freedom to Vote Act, which will help protect voting rights for generations to come.
“The era of bipartisan consensus on voting rights appears to be over, sadly. Republican Senators, including Sen. Steve Daines, blocked a simple majority vote on voting rights bills this week. Rep. Matt Rosendale voted against the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Here in Montana, Republican legislators and Gov. Gianforte made restricting voting rights a central part of their first year in office.
“Now is the time for our Montana Republican leaders to join Montana Democrats and Senator Tester in the long Montana tradition of defending our right to vote.”
