  • Republican Montana Senate candidate Tim Sheehy has repeatedly told supporters he would support getting rid of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the agency tasked with border security, Axios has learned.

  • Dismantling DHS would be a major turn away from the post-9/11 reorganization of the federal government, even as Republicans call for a crackdown at the southern border.

  • Republican leaders in Congress this week touted the increased funding to DHS for border enforcement and security as part of a long-awaited government funding agreement.

  • Sheehy has told supporters on at least three occasions that he supports getting rid of DHS, according to audio obtained by Axios.

  • His campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

  • Sheehy told supporters at an August luncheon in Kalispell, Montana, that the agency could go, arguing it is "anything but homeland security."

  • He made similar remarks at a meet-and-greet the same month in Glasgow, Montana, arguing DHS can "go away."

  • He said the same thing in September in Superior, Montana, saying DHS is "not needed."

  • Sheehy in the audio did not explain to supporters how federal border and airport security operations would be affected by such a move. Sheehy's campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Washington Examiner: Montana GOP Senate candidate tells supporters he wants to gut DHS: Report
March 26, 2024
By Cami Mondeaux

  • Tim Sheehy, the Republican candidate in the Montana Senate race, has reportedly told supporters he would support dismantling the Department of Homeland Security if elected to the upper chamber.

  • The pledge comes in contrast to other congressional Republicans who have sought to increase funding and support to the agency tasked with security at the southern border.

  • The report also comes after GOP congressional leaders have lauded the most recent government funding deal that passed Congress last week for its increased funding to the DHS. The provisions in the spending bill included funding for 22,000 border agents, a 25% spending increase for border technology, and a 20% cut in federal funding to nongovernmental organizations that provide transportation and food vouchers to immigrants who are released into the country on asylum claims — all major wins for Republicans.

  • The Washington Examiner contacted Sheehy’s campaign for comment but has not received a response.
