Rehberg's Opposition to Helping Wounded Vets Highlighted on PTSD Awareness Day

Thanks to an act of Congress pushed by Jon Tester, today is PTSD Awareness Day.  And across Montana, veterans' advocates are taking note of Congressman Dennis Rehberg's recent votes against veterans.

Congresman Rehberg recently voted against a bipartisan plan to help veterans suffering from from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brian injury, and missing limbs. The measure would have used $28 million in unspent funds to invest in research for these battlefield injuries, but Congressman Rehberg refused to support it.

Veterans' advocates have also been speaking out against Congressman Rehberg's opposition to PTSD research.

ICYMI: Rehberg Still Pushing Police State Border Bill, Despite Vocal Opposition

Helena, Mont. -- In case you missed it, Congressman Rehberg's bill to let Homeland Security take "operational control" over the northermost 100 miles of Montana pass the U.S. House yesterday.  The bill would let a single federal agency make decisions about Montana's public lands with no public input whatsoever.

Opposition to this bill has been intense, widespread, and it has come from across the political spectrum.  Here's what opponents to Congressman Rehberg's land grab said after he moved it through the U.S. House yesterday:

Montana Democratic Party Releases New Ad: “Unreasonable Bailouts”

The Montana Democratic Party released a new ad today holding multimillionaire Congressman Dennis Rehberg accountable for voting against Montana on important issues that affect our state. Congressman Rehberg voted for billions in tax breaks for Wall Street bankers, and voted to let CEOs get millions in taxpayer-funded bonuses.

“After 12 years in Washington, Dennis Rehberg has forgotten where he comes from," said Ted Dick, Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party. “Congressman Rehberg voted for billions in special tax breaks to big bankers on Wall Street, and to let Wall Street CEOs get millions in bonuses funded by taxpayer bailouts.”

As he speaks to party faithful, will Rehberg explain support for Patriot Act, REAL ID?

Helena, Mont. -- Multimillionaire Congressman Dennis Rehberg will tell his party's convention tonight that the U.S. Senate race is about a "contrast of philosophies."  He's right.

Background: Relationship Between Speaker Newt Gingrich and Congressman Rick Hill

The history between Speaker Gingrich and Congressman Rick Hill goes back to when Hill first became a member of the House of Representatives in the 90’s.

MEMO: Rick Hill Supports a Montana Sales Tax

On the heels of Steve Bullock’s announcement of a Job-Creating Homeowner Tax Rebate, please find below your requested information regarding Congressman Hill supporting a sales tax.

In summary, Rick Hill – the former congressman and current gubernatorial candidate – led the charge for a 4 percent, $400 million sales tax in Montana as the head lobbyist for Governor Racicot in 1993. Hill most recently professed his sales tax support last year in stating: “I have often been an advocate for a sales tax as a substitute tax” (1).

Hill’s sales tax is regressive.  It would have hurt middle-class folks in Montana as they go to buy groceries, trucks, guns, and homes.  Further Hill’s sales tax would have significantly shifted the tax burden.  Corporations would have seen significant tax reductions through the reduction of property tax mill levies.  All of the new sales tax revenue would have been paid by individual tax payers through the sales tax.
