Rehberg votes against Hardin, Columbus ahead of visit to both communities

Rehberg won’t tell whole story about his votes against Montana communities on campaign stops today

Helena, MT -- Montana’s millionaire Congressman Dennis Rehberg is touring Columbus and Hardin today, but don’t expect him to mention his recent vote to hold up Social Security checks in both communities.

"Congressman Rehberg is back from Washington where he just voted to kill Medicare and Social Security, protect tax loopholes for fellow millionaires, and default on our economy," said Ted Dick, Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party.  "Montana seniors and veterans aren't going to forget what Congressman Rehberg is doing to us in Washington DC, no matter what he tries to tell us on his cover-up tour."

On August 1st, Congressman Rehberg voted against a bi-partisan package that prevented a default on America’s debt, a decision that would have gravely impacted the people of Hardin and Columbus:

In Columbus (Stillwater County):

  • $30,194,000 in Social Security checks would not have been sent,
  • $14,803,000 in Medicare payments would not have gone out the door,
  • $2,281,000 in wages for our troops and other federal workers would have been lost,  [all figures from KXLF, 7/21/11].

In Hardin (Big Horn County):

  • $28,012,000 in Social Security checks would not have been sent,
  • $32,531 in Medicare payments would not have gone out the door,
  • $23,690 in wages for our troops and other federal workers would have been lost,  [all figures from KXLF, 7/21/11].

This would not be the first time Congressman Rehberg visited a Montana community to take credit for something he didn’t do.  Last year, Congressman Rehberg cut the ribbon on an eastern Montana road funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -- a bill he voted against [KPAX, 9/23/11].
