“Special Interest” Steve Daines Supports More Money in Politics

Congressman defends McCutcheon decision, builds on record of protecting corporate & special interests

(Helena, MT) – Congressman Steve Daines is celebrating the unpopular U.S. Supreme Court Decision that opens the door for more special interest money in elections.

Since the Copper King era, Montanans have stood against corporate money in elections. In 2012,voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot initiative calling on the state's leaders to overturn the Citizens United decision, which re-defined corporations as people, allowing them to spend money on political campaigns with no transparency.
Although Montanans have stood opposed to secret money in elections, Congressman Daines has a long record of siding with special interests.

  • Daines supports the Citizens United Supreme Court decision allowing unlimited secret money in Montana elections.
  • Daines opposes the proposed constitutional amendment to limit corporate spending in elections.
  • Daines has taken $20,000 in campaign contributions from the Citizens United Political Victory Fund.

“Congressman Daines sure is doing his part to help billionaires and special interests – from corporate tax breaks and millionaire tax cuts to making sure the wealthy can spend as much as they want on our political elections,” said Bryan Watt, spokesperson for the Montana Democratic Party. “Although Montanans have asked their representatives to do something to stop outside influence on our electoral process, Congressman Daines is sitting on his hands and doing nothing to fix the problem. Leadership matters.”
