Montana Republicans Once Again Attempt to Pass a Statewide General Sales Tax

Sales Tax Benefits the Wealthy and Would Hurt Hard Working Montana Families

HELENA -- Once again Montana Republicans tried to force a statewide general sales tax onto hard working Montana Families. HB 620, carried by Rep. Kerry White, was debated on the MT House floor today and would have added a 2% sales tax on everything Montanans purchase.

"A statewide general sales tax is a bad idea that Montana Republicans clearly won't give up on," said Nancy Keenan, Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party. "As Montana Republicans continue trying to raise taxes on hard working Montana families, Democrats will continue to fight back and protect our Montana values."

The floor vote for HB 620 failed 18-82.

The Republican running for Congress in Montana, New Jersey multimillionaire Greg Gianforte, is a known supporter of a statewide general sales tax.

Previously, Gianforte testified during a meeting of former Governor Judy Martz’s Income Tax Advisory Council saying:

“What I would consider an ideal solution, from a high-tech perspective… would be to replace the current income capital gains rate with a sales tax,” Gianforte told the Council. “I know that there are a few political issues and Constitutional issues, but I didn’t think I’d be fair to come in here and not say that I believe that is the ideal solution—to move to a consumptive tax.”
