Leading Pro-Choice Groups: Greg Gianforte is a Danger to Montana Women and Families

HELENA – NARAL Pro-Choice Montana and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Montana supporters gathered yesterday at Women’s Park in Helena to call out New Jersey multimillionaire Greg Gianforte’s dangerous record on women’s healthcare and reproductive freedom.

VIDEO of the event can be found here. High-quality footage is available on request.

“Greg Gianforte stands with groups that strongly oppose women’s right to make their own personal medical decisions,” said Planned Parenthood Advocates of Montana CEO Martha Stahl. “He has demonstrated his lack of respect for access to health care and for those rights, and he’s demonstrated that lack of respect with his personal pocketbook. Greg Gianforte is out of touch with Montanan values – the values that we have with respecting our right to privacy in this state, as guaranteed in our Constitution, and our ability to make medical decisions without interference from politicians or the government.”

“Greg Gianforte supported the things we call ‘Crisis Pregnancy Centers,’” said interim executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Montana, Nik Griffith. “Sixty-seven percent of these places lie to women about abortion causing breast cancer. They lie to them about the effectiveness of contraception – about birth control – and they use emotionally manipulative tactics against rape victims to try to convince them to make choices that they don’t want to. They provide false information on a daily basis without regulation or check back. Greg Gianforte wants those places to be who provides healthcare to women in Montana and we are not okay with that.”

Montanans are speaking up with concerns about how Gianforte would vote on women’s healthcare in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congress continues to debate funding for Planned Parenthood – which provides cancer screenings, contraception, family planning and other services to more than 15,000 Montanans every year – as well as whether health insurance plans should cover things like maternity care.

  • Gianforte said he would push for anti-choice legislation while touting the endorsement from an out-of-state, anti-choice group. (Susan B. Anthony list, accessed 8/11/16)

  • Gianforte-backed Montana Family Foundation fought to outlaw choice even in cases of rape. (HB 574, Montana Family Foundation lobbying disclosure, 5/27/11)

  • Gianforte gave thousands of dollars to the Family Research Council, which opposes abortions with no exceptions. (IRS, Guidestar 990s forms, accessed 5/6/15; CNN, 8/20/12)

  • Between 2004 and 2014, Gianforte gave nearly $700,000 to anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers that have been criticized for giving false information to limit women’s choices.
