Greg Gianforte Open to Disastrous Health Care Bill, Jacking up Premiums & Ending Protections for People with Pre-existing Conditions

HELENA – As Congress moves toward a vote on a worse version of their disastrous D.C. health care bill, New Jersey multimillionaire Greg Gianforte today said he is considering supporting the legislation. Politico reports that he’s taking a “wait-and-see approach” – despite House leadership planning a vote on the bill as soon as tomorrow.

“When it comes to Montanans’ access to health care, ‘wait and see’ doesn’t cut it. As a member of Congress, Greg Gianforte would have to take a vote on this train wreck of a plan – which would allow insurers to charge people with preexisting conditions more, increase Montanans’ premiums by $300, or even charge more just for being a woman,” said Nancy Keenan, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party. “This bill is so bad, members of Congress are exempting themselves. Yet Gianforte won’t stand up for our health care and come out against the bill.”

The American Health Care Act would increase Montanans premiums by an average of $306 every month, force older Americans to pay premiums five times higher than younger Americans, and cut Medicare. The amended version of the bill, which the House is expected to vote on this week, maintains those original provisions while also ending protections for people with preexisting conditions – unless you’re a member of Congress.

For a 40-year-old with asthma, experts say that could mean a $4,340 premium surcharge per year. Someone with diabetes – without any complications – could be forced to pay a $5,600 surcharge. And maternity care? Pregnancy would cost an extra $17,320.

It’s clear that the D.C. health care bill has gone from bad to worse.

And don’t forget: Gianforte’s campaign is being bankrolled by the very authors of the bill. His D.C. insider donors actually pulled support from Congressional candidates who opposed the plan, but they doubled down on Gianforte and are spending even more money to support his campaign.
