Debate Recap: Gianforte Has 'No particular plans' to Protect Women's Health

Gianforte Dodges Question (Twice) on Whether He Would Take Away Women's Rights & Freedoms

In addition to failing to explain why he lobbied to impose a statewide sales tax on hard working, middle-class Montana families, or why he sued Montanans to eliminate a public access to a public river, or why he supports policies that would strip funding from public education and give it to private schools, New Jersey multimillionaire Greg Gianforte also failed to answer a simple question about whether or not he would protect Montana women's right to make their own healthcare decisions:

“I don't have any particular plans...I'm running because we need more high-wage jobs here in the state.”

MTN Reporter Mike Dennison asked Gianforte twice if he supports banning federal funding for Planned Parenthood during Saturday's debate in Great Falls, but both times Gianforte refused to answer the question.

"It's a simple question that deserves a simple answer, but New Jersey multimillionaire Greg Gianforte decided to hide his dangerous agenda from Montana women," said Marissa Perry, a spokesperson for the Montana Democratic Party. "A short trip down memory lane shows that Gianforte supports extreme positions that would take away our freedoms and put politicians like Gianforte in charge of women's health care choices."

Since Gianforte launched his campaign to buy the Governor's office, he has attempted to whitewash his dangerous record on many issues important to hardworking, middle-class families - including Montana women's right to access healthcare.

Several Montana organizations have spoken out against Gianforte, pointing out that he is trying to "buy the right to make decisions for women" and "violate Montana families' constitutionally guaranteed right to privacy."

Gianforte's dangerous record on women's health has been slammed by both NARAL Pro-Choice Montana and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Montana:

  • Gianforte has given over $2 million to anti-choice organizations that lobby against women making their own health care choices. (Gianforte Family Charitable Trust, via Guidestar)
  • Gianforte said he would push for anti-choice legislation while touting the endorsement from an out-of-state, anti-choice group that wants to outlaw choice with no exceptions. (Susan B. Anthony list, accessed 8/11/16; Vox, 9/20/16)
  • Gianforte backed Montana Family Foundation fought to outlaw choice even in cases of rape. (HB 574, Montana Family Foundation lobbying disclosure, 5/27/11)
  • Gianforte gave thousands of dollars to the Family Research Council, which opposes abortions with no exceptions. (IRS, Guidestar 990s forms, accessed 5/6/15; CNN, 8/20/12)
  • Between 2004 and 2014, Gianforte gave nearly $700,000 to anti-choice, crisis pregnancy centers that have been criticized for giving false information to limit women’s choices. (Gianforte Family Charitable Trust, via Guidestar; NARAL Pro-Choice Montana Foundation, 2013 Investigative Report)
