Daines Supports ACA Repeal with No Replacement, Kicking 32 Million Americans Off Insurance
Helena – After 26 days of refusing to tell Montanans his position on the Senate plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, Steve Daines decided in less than 14 hours to support repealing the law with no replacement at all.
The straight repeal bill, which Daines voted for in 2015, is even more cruel than the previous Better Care Reconciliation Act. According to a Congressional Budget Office analysis from January, this legislation would leave 32 million Americans uninsured and increase premiums up to 100% over the next ten years. It would also completely eliminate the Medicaid expansion and defund Planned Parenthood.
Daines announced his support minutes before it became clear that repealing the ACA without a replacement could not pass the Senate, ensuring he could save face for his base and try to avoid the actual consequences of kicking tens of thousands of his constituents off their health insurance.
“Senator Steve Daines claims to have spent the last three weeks listening to Montanans on health care. But if he heard that folks want to destroy the entire health care system without even trying to provide an alternative, he needs to get his hearing checked,” said Nancy Keenan, Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party. “Make no mistake, today Daines announced his support for forcing Montana families to pay more for less coverage and kicking tens of thousands of folks off their insurance. Montanans will not forget that when their health was at stake, Steve Daines chose to stand with Washington special interests and his party bosses.”
