Daines Lacks Leadership, Clarity on Iraq
Congressman Daines stakes out different positions on same issue
(Helena, MT) – A recent opinion piece praised the only Iraq War veteran in the U.S. Senate, John Walsh, for his leadership in opposing re-sending troops to Iraq. Here are a few excerpts:
“Walsh didn’t use the wishy-washy terms so favored by politicians these days.”
“As the only Iraq War veteran in the Senate, Walsh brings a unique perspective to Congress.”
“Walsh deserves credit for remembering that and telling reporters he was “deeply troubled” by Obama’s decision to send in the advisers.”
While Senator John Walsh has clearly defined his position and came out immediately in his opposition to sending troops to Iraq, Congressman Steve Daines has shown that he lacks the courage and leadership on tough issues.
Daines has been wish-washy on where he stands staking out two different positions. During the first debate of the General Election, Daines stated the U.S. needs “to be pro active and get on the front of this.” However, he later backed away from that position stating he will “analyze other options” when it comes to further U.S. involvement in Iraq.
“It’s clear that Steve Daines lacks the leadership to be a United States Senator. Montanans don’t want to be involved in another costly war abroad. It’s time for Congressman Daines to clearly tell Montanans whether or not he wants to send our young women and men back to Iraq,” said Bryan Watt, spokesperson for the Montana Democratic Party.
