Daines Dishonesty Tracker Counts More Doublespeak on Women’s Issues

Congressman voted against funding for women health and violence prevention programs

(Helena, MT) – The Daines Dishonesty Tracker continues to tick up as Congressman Steve Daines continues to tell Montanans one thing but do another while in Washington.  In his newest ad, Daines claims he supports victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, but his claim doesn’t hold up to the facts.

Daines points to a single vote for the Violence Against Women Act as evidence of his support for those programs – but he voted against the necessary funding those programs need to serve victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

“This is politics at it’s worst. Yet again, Congressman Daines attempts to score cheap political points on the backs of Montanans, and this time,  it is domestic violence victims. Montana families and women who have faced these horrible crimes deserve more than dishonest statements in television ads, they deserve honesty and unwavering support,” said Andrea Marcoccio, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party.

The newest addition to the Dishonesty Tracker is Daines’ assertion that he supports women’s healthcare:

Daines Claim: He says he supports women’s health care.
Reality: Daines voted to eliminate funding for women’s preventative healthcare organizations such as Planned Parenthood.

Women’s issues seem to be a common source of doublespeak for Daines. To date, the Daines Dishonesty Tracker has found a total of 16 dishonest statements from Congressman Daines, five related to Daines’ harmful record on issues important to Montana women.  Here is a re-cap:

Daines Claim: He claims he does not support outlawing birth control.
Reality: Daines sponsored a “personhood” bill that could effectively outlaw common forms of birth control.

Daines Claim: He claims that he wants Montanans to be able to make their own healthcare decisions.
Reality: Daines has voted numerous times to dismantle a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, including support for a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion even in cases of rape or incest.

Daines Claim: He claims to support victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Reality: Daines voted against funding domestic violence and sexual assault prevention programs.

Daines Claim: He claims that he supports equal pay for women.
Reality: Daines blocked a vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act to provide equal pay for equal work.

Daines Claim: He says he supports women’s health care.
Reality: Daines voted to eliminate funding for women’s preventative healthcare organizations such as Planned Parenthood.
